Women from the construction industry are sounding the alarm about sexual harassment in the workplace. Together with the trade union Unia, they are calling for binding rules in all companies and all collective employment contracts. On Saturday, they launched a sticker offensive.
This is intended to make the taboo subject visible, as Unia announced after the construction women's meeting in Bern on Saturday. However, the problem cannot be solved with stickers alone, concrete measures are needed.
The construction women are calling for a zero-tolerance strategy, cooperation between companies and independent external specialist bodies, training and awareness-raising for employees and supervisors, as well as the concretization of the ban on sexual harassment in collective employment contracts in accordance with the Gender Equality Act.
According to the Unia press release, the construction women emphasize that sexual harassment never has anything to do with flirting, but is an abuse of power that they want to consistently combat.
Before the women's strike in 2023, Unia surveyed around 300 women in construction about their most pressing concerns. Half of the women stated that they had already experienced sexual harassment and sexualized violence at work.
