The Council of States wants the federal government to do more to protect wild and honey bees. The small chamber is calling for measures to ensure that plants continue to be pollinated by insects in the future.

On Tuesday, the Council of States adopted a motion by Peter Hegglin (center/ZG) by 35 votes to 5 with two abstentions. The motion will now go to the National Council.

Hegglin explains that bees are essential for Switzerland's food security. Among other things, he is calling for monitoring of honey and wild bee populations, more research and more support for beekeepers.

The Federal Council was of the opinion that no further motions were required - partly because Parliament had already passed motions on the subject.
