The Council of States wants to provide CHF 2.5 million more for the protection of religious minorities in the coming year than originally planned in the Federal Council's budget. On Tuesday, it adopted a motion by Thierry Burkart (FDP/AG).

The small chamber made its decision by 39 votes to 0 with five abstentions. At the same time, it allocated the corresponding funds in the financial plan for the years 2025 to 2027.

The money is to benefit Jewish and Muslim communities. Burkart justified his request in particular with the situation in the Middle East. It was a small amount of money, he said, and also about protecting the fundamental right of freedom of faith and conscience.

Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter agreed with the motion. She said it was shameful for Jews in Switzerland to have to fear for their safety.
