The Council of States wants to spend more on agriculture in 2024 than the Federal Council is proposing. It increased the corresponding expenditure when discussing the budget on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the small chamber decided to make CHF 54.8 million more available for direct payments in the coming year than the national government would like. It thus followed a minority of the Finance Committee and voted in favor of leaving direct payments for 2024 at the level of 2023, with a total of around CHF 2.8 billion.

The Council of States also wants to spend CHF 3.9 million more on breeding and preserving Swiss animal breeds, CHF 6.2 million more on promoting the sale of Swiss wine and CHF 2.0 million more on sugar beet production.

The Federal Office for Agriculture is also to receive CHF 1.1 million more than proposed for pest control. Finally, the Council of States allocated an additional four million francs for herd protection.
