Rejected asylum seekers from Eritrea are to be returned home from Switzerland via a third country. This is what Parliament wants. The National Council has adopted a motion by FDP member of parliament Petra Gössi.

Rejected Eritrean asylum seekers cannot be deported as Eritrea categorically rejects the forced return of its citizens. For the majority of the National Council's Political Institutions Committee (SPK-N), this is unacceptable. It therefore voted in favor of Gössi's motion.

The National Council agreed with the majority on Monday by 120 votes to 75. It had rejected a similar motion in December. However, as a migration partnership or readmission agreement with Eritrea was not on the horizon, the majority now argued that more pressure was needed.

Gössi's motion calls on the Federal Council to conclude a transit agreement with a suitable third country. The model should be a 2003 agreement with Senegal, which was never in force.
