The project to cover the A12 highway in the Chamblioux-Bertigny area near the city of Fribourg is to enter the next phase. The Fribourg State Council has asked the Grand Council to grant a conditional guarantee of CHF 10.65 million to the Federal Roads Office for the second part of the studies.

Should the project not be realized at the end of the democratic process, the canton of Fribourg would be obliged to cover the costs of the second part of the studies. The requested guarantee would guarantee the reimbursement of costs in the event of the project being abandoned, as the Directorate for Spatial Development, Infrastructure, Mobility and the Environment wrote in a press release on Friday.

The canton of Fribourg and the federal government also signed a new agreement for the project on October 30. It regulates the financial aspects, responsibilities and organization, according to the press release. For the agreement to enter into force, it must be confirmed by the Federal Council and the guarantee approved by the Grand Council of Fribourg.

Construction would start in 2031

With this project, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) and the canton of Fribourg are planning to cover a 1255-metre section of freeway on the western edge of Fribourg. The overlay would enable "large-scale urban development in the heart of the cantonal center", the statement continued.

The total cost of the project is currently estimated at around CHF 227.16 million, according to the press release. It is planned that Astra and the canton of Fribourg will each contribute 42 percent of the construction costs. The remainder is to be covered by partners.

If the Grand Council and then the Fribourg electorate approve the project, construction of the overpass could begin in 2031. Commissioning is expected to take place in 2034.
