The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on marriages, divorces and births in the Swiss population. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reported that the latter in particular had increased significantly. A special phenomenon occurred in Switzerland.

The pandemic has led to an unexpected development in the number of births, according to a study by the FSO. Even before the pandemic, the number of births in Switzerland was declining. A first wave of births was registered between December 2020 and March 2021. Compared to the same period in the previous year, there was an increase of 4.5%.

A second wave of births was recorded between July and October 2021, the report continued. The number of births was 5.5 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. While the first wave of births was also registered in other European countries, the second is a purely Swiss phenomenon.

According to the FSO, there was already a decline in marriages before the pandemic. However, at the start of the actual wedding season in May 2020, 42 percent fewer marriages were then performed than in May a year ago.

The number of divorces was trending upwards before the pandemic. In 2020, however, divorce decrees fell by four percent compared to the previous year, wrote the FSO. Even after the pandemic in 2022, there would have been a decline of 5.6 percent.
