The Swiss insurance group Visana has recently announced its entry into the private hospital group Swiss Medical Network. Visana CEO Angelo Eggli has stated that the insurance group will not interfere in the operational business of the hospital group, but will be involved in the development of the healthcare regions. As a first step, an alternative insurance model for basic healthcare will be set up in the Bernese Jura region next year. A fixed budget for patient care will be negotiated between the hospitals and Visana. However, there will be no direct negotiations between Visana and Swiss Medical Network, as Visana will remain a customer of Tarifsuisse, which negotiates hospital tariffs for a group of health insurers. Visana's entry into Swiss Medical Network is part of its goal to transform the Swiss healthcare system from a "disease system" to a true healthcare system. Swiss Medical Network consists of 21 clinics and hospitals and more than 60 outpatient centers in 15 cantons of Switzerland.
