“Dune: Part Two” gets off to a successful start in cinemas

"Dune: Part Two" drew people to cinemas around the world at the weekend - including in Switzerland. The sequel to Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic was released in cinemas at the end of last week.

In North America alone, the science fiction epic grossed 81.5 million US dollars at the box office. Worldwide, the film brought in 178.5 million dollars. As the industry publication "Hollywood Reporter" reported, this is not only the most successful theatrical release this year, the film also managed to double the result of the first part. According to "Variety", it is the most successful cinema release since Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour".

The second part of "Dune" was released in cinemas throughout Switzerland at the end of last week and recorded a total of more than 94,000 admissions, 58,800 of which were in German-speaking Switzerland, according to Filmdistribution Schweiz on Monday.

The first visually stunning film by director Denis Villeneuve (2021) was already a huge success at the box office. According to the industry portal "Box Office Mojo", "Dune", which was shot on a budget of around 150 million euros, grossed more than 400 million euros worldwide.

The material is based on a series of novels by Frank Herbert. The story centers on the desert planet Arrakis. Only there is a special, valuable substance, which is why the planet is exploited by other powers in the galaxy and its inhabitants are oppressed. Villeneuve brought together many stars for his film adaptation, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler.
