Elena Schwarz, a conductor with Swiss and Australian roots, will take up one of two residencies at the renowned Klangforum Wien. This was announced by the expert ensemble for contemporary works on Wednesday. Alongside her, Vimbayi Kaziboni will play a central role in shaping the orchestra's fortunes for three years.

Klangforum Wien is currently in full swing at the current Wien Modern festival. At the same time, they are looking to the future. Schwarz and Kaziboni will take up their positions as Conductors in Residence on January 1. "The newly created positions at Klangforum Wien stand for a dialog and deepening that goes far beyond individual concert performances," explained artistic director Peter Paul Kainrath in a statement.

Schwarz was born in Lugano in 1985. She specializes in contemporary music. She regularly works with specialist ensembles in this field, for example with the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra. She performed with this festival orchestra at the Lucerne Festival at the end of August, performing works by Tyshawn Sorey and Thomas Adès.

Schwarz initially studied cello and musicology before turning to conducting, which she studied at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with Laurent Gay and at the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana with Arturo Tamayo. She has taken part in master classes with Peter Eötvös, Bernard Haitink, Matthias Pintscher and Neeme Järvi.

She quickly made a name for herself internationally, and the list of international orchestras she works with is long: for example the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and in Switzerland the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra or the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.

She will perform in her new role for the first time at Klangforum Wien on May 4, 2024, while her colleague Kaziboni, who was born in Zimbabwe in 1988, will perform for the first time on February 20, 2024.
