The milk processor Emmi is buying the coffee roasting company Hochstrasser, based in Lucerne. The company, which roasts the coffee beans for the Emmi Caffè Latte brand among other things, is a long-standing partner of Emmi. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

According to a statement on Wednesday, the coffee roasting company, which was founded in 1852, employs around 50 people and generated net sales of 17 million Swiss francs in 2023. According to the statement, the company has been a partner of Emmi for 20 years and specializes in the gentle, long-term roasting of coffee beans using the traditional drum roasting process.

Hochstrasser also offers tea, punch and chocolate powder and provides services in the areas of coffee machine concepts, barista courses and quality control. Its main customers come from the catering and hotel industry.

According to Emmi, the takeover, which is still subject to approval by the competition authorities, will ensure the quality and innovative strength of freshly roasted and brewed coffee for Emmi Caffè Latte in the long term. The close cooperation between the two Lucerne-based companies is a key success factor for barista quality, it says.

But Emmi does not just want to continue sourcing coffee from Hochstrasser. The new subsidiary should also further expand its market position in the food service sector with its Hochstrasser and Don George brands. Following the acquisition, the existing management and Board of Directors will remain with Hochstrasser.
