The new European research project "Timberhaus" was recently launched in Copenhagen. It is intended to promote timber construction in Europe. The aim is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the construction sector by developing innovative timber construction technologies and construction solutions. Switzerland is also involved in the project.

The pan-European consortium consists of 19 partners from ten countries, including the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), the latter announced on Monday.

The construction sector is responsible for 40 percent of global CO2be emissions, 50 percent of all materials removed and 35 percent of waste produced. Despite numerous advantages for the climate, wood materials are still only spreading slowly in the construction sector. The European project was launched at the beginning of November. It is co-financed by the EU and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) for four years.

Empa researchers will use digital tools such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to develop innovative prototypes that demonstrate the potential of underutilized wood resources in construction.

These include wood-based materials for load-bearing structures in multi-storey buildings and flooring solutions that use hardwood and reclaimed wood. The aim is also to provide the construction sector with practicable and efficient products that meet current building standards while promoting the principles of the circular economy and supporting European climate targets.
