The production and logistics site of gift-wrapping paper manufacturer Stewo in Wolhusen LU is to be "relocated" and "reorganized" in stages by the end of March 2025. It is not yet clear what this will mean for the employees.

A large number of redundancies are to be expected, the Luzerner Zeitung reported on Wednesday. It quoted an anonymous source as saying that only a small number of employees could remain with the company. However, Stewo has not yet confirmed this. The company could not be reached for comment by the Keystone-SDA news agency.

However, Stewo announced in a press release on Wednesday that individual solutions are being sought for the employees affected in order to facilitate the "transition". Gregor Kaufmann, a local councillor in Wolhusen, also confirmed this to Keystone-SDA. "We are not simply giving notice, but are looking for ways that are reasonably acceptable."

According to Kaufmann, 56 people currently work at the company. It has not yet been confirmed whether people will have to leave, nor how many people will be affected. Stewo wants to continue operations until the closure at the end of March 2025. "We hope that everyone will have a follow-up solution by then".

The realignment is necessary in order to continue to meet the challenges of the market, Stewo wrote in the press release. According to the company, it is facing ever-increasing competition from other European and Asian countries and the resulting price pressure. In addition, persistently high raw material and energy prices are having a negative impact on production costs.

Stewo is the only wrapping paper manufacturer in Switzerland and produces 30 million meters of wrapping paper every year. In 2018, the company was taken over by Baier & Schneider GmbH & Co in Germany.
