Employment Growth Continues in Second Quarter

The employment situation in Switzerland continues to be positive. In the second quarter of 2023, more jobs were created. The number of jobs increased by 2.2% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 5.432 million employed people. This is the ninth consecutive increase, according to the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). In the secondary sector (industry and construction), employment increased by 2.1% (+24,000 jobs) and in the tertiary sector (services) by 2.2% (+93,000 jobs). On a full-time basis, the employment volume reached 4.235 million jobs (+2.2%). There were differences between regions. The increase in the canton of Ticino was 0.6%, while the region of Zurich had a 3.4% increase. In the secondary sector, the employment growth was strongest in the North West region (+5.1%) and in the tertiary sector in the Central region (+4.2%). There was a slight decrease in the number of open positions, which decreased by 2.3% compared to the previous year. The recruitment of personnel also showed a slight improvement compared to the previous year. The difficulty in finding skilled workers decreased overall, although companies in the machinery industry are still heavily affected, while the situation in the hospitality industry has clearly improved.nnnnnnnnnn
