It was supposed to be a happy May outing among friends and ended for some with serious injuries in hospital: around 30 people were injured in an accident involving a May Day trailer in Kandern in southern Baden on Labour Day. 10 people suffered serious injuries, the police announced on Wednesday. As things stand at present, no one has suffered life-threatening injuries. It was initially unclear exactly what injuries the people had sustained.
According to initial investigations, a trailer being pulled by a tractor tipped onto its side on a steep bend. According to the police, the people fell out of the trailer.
A police spokesman said in the afternoon that the police knew the names of 22 injured people and that some of those with minor injuries had left the scene before the police could take their details.
Photos show the red trailer lying on its side, with two rows of benches attached to it. Several crates of beer are stowed at the front. A beer bottle and several wooden slats lie in front of the overturned trailer - there is also a pair of shoes on the side of the road.
What exactly happened in the early afternoon in the community around 50 kilometers south of Freiburg is still under investigation. The driver is being investigated on suspicion of negligent bodily harm, said a police spokesperson. For the investigation, the police also took overview images of the accident scene with a drone.
It is still unclear exactly why the May wagon, which was being pulled by a tractor, overturned. According to the spokesperson, the wagon was not traveling too fast and was almost stationary when the accident occurred. It is assumed that the slope at the scene of the accident may have played a role. "The investigation will also focus on whether too many people were loaded onto the vehicle."
According to the police, the people in the car were a group of friends from the surrounding communities. The group members were all between 20 and 25 years old, said a police spokesman. There were no children on the car.
Numerous police and emergency services personnel were on site to treat and remove the injured, including several rescue helicopters - some of which came from nearby Switzerland.
