English becomes compulsory for the vocational baccalaureate

English will in future be a compulsory subject for the vocational baccalaureate. This is one of several changes provided for in the total revision of the Vocational Baccalaureate Ordinance.
At its meeting on Wednesday, the Federal Council opened the consultation process, as it writes in a communiqué. The aim is to keep the vocational baccalaureate attractive for young people and adapt it to current requirements.
Among other things, English will now be a compulsory third language. In addition, the requirements for interdisciplinary project work will be expanded. And new requirements for the use of digital media will be included in the framework curriculum.
The vocational baccalaureate has existed in Switzerland since 1993. With the supplementary examination called Passerelle, it enables access to universities and teacher training colleges. According to federal figures, around 14,000 people in Switzerland completed a vocational baccalaureate in 2022.
The consultation on the total revision runs until July 24, 2024.
