The Schwyz government remains firmly in the hands of the conservatives: the electorate re-elected the entire previous cantonal government on Sunday. The SP failed to win back the government seat it lost twelve years ago.
As a result, three representatives of the SVP and two each from the FDP and CVP remain in the Schwyz government. Voter turnout amounted to 54.4 percent.
The best result was achieved by Damian Meier (FDP) with 38,103 votes, ahead of André Rüegsegger (SVP/37,989 votes) and the only woman in the government, the independent Petra Steimen-Rickenbacher (37,698 votes). They were followed by Herbert Huwiler (SVP/37,183 votes), Sandro Patierno (center/36,295 votes), Michael Stähli (center/36,217 votes) and Xaver Schuler (SVP/36,026 votes). All seven incumbents thus easily achieved the absolute majority of 21,047 votes.
The elections were disappointing for the SP, which wanted to regain the left-wing seat in the cantonal government it lost twelve years ago. Their candidate, Cantonal Council President Jonathan Prelicz, finished in last place with 17,253 votes. The independent farmer Peter Abegg came in ahead of him with 17,880 votes.
No balanced government
SP President Karin Schwiter told the Keystone-SDA news agency that it would be difficult to run against seven incumbents. Prelicz had exhausted the voting potential of the SP and the Greens. Apparently, however, too few members of the middle classes are prepared to vote for a politically balanced government.
In contrast to the 2020 elections, the parties were no longer able to form joint lists. There was only one ballot paper on which voters had to mark the candidates they wanted. However, this did not help the SP. It is impossible to say whether it was due to the incumbent bonus, said Schwiter.
