Erwin Sperisen to Be Released from Prison on Friday

Erwin Sperisen, a former police chief of Guatemala, is expected to be released from the Justizvollzugsanstalt Witzwil BE prison in Switzerland on Friday, shortly after his conviction was overturned by the Federal Court. The Geneva Office for Enforcement of Sanctions confirmed the news to Keystone-SDA. Sperisen was convicted in 2018 of ordering extrajudicial killings and was sentenced to eight years in prison. However, the Federal Court overturned the conviction in April 2021, citing a lack of evidence. Sperisen is now expected to be released from prison after serving two years of his sentence.
