The EU Commission has welcomed the adoption of the Swiss negotiating mandate by the Federal Council, as a spokesperson for the European institution said on Friday in response to an inquiry. The dossier has also cleared another hurdle on the EU side.

The negotiating mandate with Switzerland was submitted to the permanent representations of the EU member states on Friday. It was listed on the agenda for adoption without discussion, a spokesperson for the Belgian Council Presidency told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry. In recent weeks, the responsible working group has been examining the mandate requested by the Commission.

However, this is not the end of the story, as only the Council of the European Union can make a binding decision. This should happen next Tuesday, according to an EU source. The Economic and Financial Affairs Council will meet in Brussels on that day.

As soon as the EU Commission also has a mandate, negotiations between it and the Federal Council can begin. According to the Federal Council, this is expected to happen this month.
