EU Council President Charles Michel has criticized China's boycott of the Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland at the G7 summit. "It is disappointing that China will not be attending," said the Belgian at the meeting of the heads of state and government of the leading democratic industrialized nations in Italy on Thursday.
At the end of May, China announced that it would not take part in the Ukraine peace conference organized by Switzerland. There was a clear gap between the organization of the conference and China's requirements as well as the general expectations of the international community, which made it difficult for the People's Republic to participate, explained Foreign Office spokeswoman Mao Ning in Beijing.
Around 40 heads of state and government have registered for the Ukraine peace conference next weekend. Delegations from a total of 90 countries and organizations are expected to attend. Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, is not taking part. Moscow has dismissed the meeting as a Western propaganda event.
