Explorer Donald "Don" Walsh has died at the age of 92. Together with the Swiss ocean explorer and engineer Jacques Piccard, who died in 2008, he set the record for the deepest dive in the Mariana Trench on January 23, 1960.

There, in the Pacific Ocean, Walsh dived together with Piccard to a depth of 10,916 meters.

Walsh died on November 12 at his home in Myrtle Point, Oregon (USA) in his favorite armchair, as his son Kelly announced to the "New York Times" on Sunday.

The historic dive by Piccard and Walsh, then a lieutenant in the US Navy, had been kept secret in case it failed, which seemed a distinct possibility as the violent waves of the western Pacific had damaged and swept away some of the submarine's most important equipment.
