The next International Biodiversity Conference will not be held in Switzerland. On Wednesday, the Federal Council decided not to consider a candidacy in the fall of 2024. In its opinion, the short-term organization would cost too much.
Representatives from science, business and civil society had called on the Federal Council to examine whether the next Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 16) could be held in Switzerland. This came after Turkey withdrew as host country at short notice last July due to the earthquakes.
According to the press release, the Federal Council has come to the conclusion that organizing a major UN conference at short notice is a logistical challenge that requires considerable financial and human resources. "Organizing this within just under a year would be very demanding."
The last international biodiversity conference in December 2022 adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It contains clear and measurable global targets for 2030 and 2050 with uniform indicators that address the main global causes of biodiversity loss. According to a report by the World Biodiversity Council (IPBES), one million species are currently threatened with extinction.
