The Federal Council has allocated around CHF 300 million over the next four years for the eleventh long-term construction program for the completion of Switzerland's national roads. The funds mainly concern the completion of the network in the cantons of Valais, Schwyz, Uri and Obwalden.
This was announced by the Federal Roads Office (Astra) on Wednesday.
More than 98 percent of the Swiss motorway network is complete and in operation. The remaining two percent or so comprise around 40 kilometers of national roads, the press release added. The main focus is on the completion of the N9 in Valais, the N4 in the cantons of Uri and Schwyz, the N8 in the canton of Obwalden and the N28 in the canton of Graubünden.
The cantons are responsible for managing and building the network. They also provide part of the financing. The federal government pays the largest share and has overall supervision, the report continued. Until 2008, the national roads were the property of the cantons. With the reorganization of financial equalization, the federal government became responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the roads. The exception to this is the completion of the national road network
The 11th long-term construction program takes into account the financial planning of the National Roads and Agglomeration Transport Fund (NAF) and the current project knowledge of the cantons and Astra. The financial resources for the completion of the motorway network come from the NAF. The motorways are therefore fully user-financed. According to the press release, the liquidity of the NAF will allow the federal government to finance the federal share of the planned projects in the coming years.
