The Federal Council does not want to create a climate fund worth billions, partly for financial policy reasons. It recommends rejecting a corresponding popular initiative by the SP and the Greens and does not want to have a counter-proposal drawn up.

In future, more solar panels should be built, building renovations driven forward, public transport expanded and the preservation of habitats and biodiversity promoted with money from a climate fund. This is what the left is calling for with the federal popular initiative "For a fair energy and climate policy: investing for prosperity, jobs and the environment (climate fund initiative)".

In the view of the Federal Council, the current efforts of the Confederation and cantons in favor of climate and biodiversity are sufficient, as it announced on Wednesday. Over CHF 3 billion would be made available annually for this purpose. According to the Federal Council, the increase in public investment demanded by the initiative would place a considerable burden on the federal budget. "This would be at the expense of other areas of responsibility."
