The Federal Council would like to leave the federal contribution of CHF 4 million for the Women's European Football Championship, which will be held in Switzerland in the summer of 2025. It rejected a motion from the Council of States calling for an increase to CHF 15 million.

The small chamber's Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-S) unanimously approved the motion. The increased federal contribution is to flow into national communication, the financing of combined public transport tickets, sustainable mobility and the promotion of tourism.

The federal offices concerned are required to offset at least 20 percent of the expenditure. The Council of States is expected to decide on the motion in the current session. The European Women's Football Championship will take place in several cities from July 2 to 27, 2025.

In its negative statement, the Federal Council referred to the tight financial situation and its decision at the end of January to support the Women's European Football Championship with four million francs. It is focusing on measures to promote the sport.

For reasons of financial policy, the national government is opposed to contributions to the concessionary use of public transport and for specific national communication. In response to the WBK-S's comment that the 2008 European Men's Football Championships were supported with CHF 80 million, he refers to the different composition of the audience and the resulting security costs.
