Federal Council wants to oblige IT companies to carry out more security checks

In future, software companies are to carry out more security checks on products, applications and components before they are released. In principle, the Federal Council is prepared to create the necessary legal basis and provide financial resources.
The topic of cybersecurity audits was taken up by the Security Policy Committee of the Council of States (SIK-S) at the end of June. In a unanimously adopted motion, it called for "the critical gap regarding the lack of cybersecurity audits to be closed".
The Commission is of the opinion that numerous urgently needed cybersecurity audits of networked infrastructures, devices and applications are not being carried out in Switzerland. These tests are indispensable for the protection of society and the functioning of the economy and authorities.
The Federal Council is proposing that the motion be accepted, as it announced on Thursday. In its statement, it writes that the financing of any resulting federal task would have to be fully secured by the companies, for example by charging fees.
Insofar as the cyber security audits would also affect third parties outside of the Federal Administration, the scope of federal competencies would still have to be analyzed in detail, the statement continued. The Federal Office for Cybersecurity (Bacs) currently lacks a corresponding mandate.
