The Federal Council is interested in further developing and stabilizing the bilateral approach. However, Switzerland's "essential interests" must be safeguarded in the process, said Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in his speech to FDP delegates on Saturday.

According to the FDP Federal Councillor, stabilizing the bilateral path with the EU is essential. He cited Switzerland's geographical location, the unstable international environment and the economy as three important reasons. The latter is the source of Switzerland's prosperity. Without stable relations with important trading partners, innovation would increasingly take place elsewhere.

On December 15, 2023, Switzerland decided to continue along the bilateral path. This is also the liberal path, the path of the FDP, said Cassis. We should continue on this path together.

The Federal Council adopted a negotiating mandate in mid-December. Five days later, the EU Commission published its draft mandate. The declared aim on both the Swiss and EU side is to be able to start negotiations in two to three months.
