The film "Reinas" by Klaudia Reynicke, a Swiss-Peruvian-Spanish co-production, has missed out on an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. The Oscar Academy removed it from its selection of 15 films announced on Tuesday.
Zurich producer Karl Spoerri, who co-produced the feature film "Thelma - Revenge has never been sweeter", is also not among the candidates for the Oscar in March.
The Baldenweg siblings - Diego, Lionel and Nora - who composed the music for the Irish film "In the Land of Saints and Sinners" starring Liam Neeson, as well as Tim Fehlbaum, who is competing in several categories with his film "September 5", are also not on the shortlist.
The nominated films include films from Germany ("The Seeds of the Holy Fig Tree"), Italy ("Vermiglio"), Brazil ("I'm Still Here"), Latvia ("Flow"), Denmark ("The Girl with the Needle"), Senegal ("Dahomey") and Ireland ("Kneecap"). France made it into the pre-selection with the musical film "Emilia Pérez" by director Jacques Audiard.
In addition to Germany, films from Italy ("Vermiglio"), Brazil ("I'm Still Here"), Latvia ("Flow"), Denmark ("The Girl with the Needle") and Senegal ("Dahomey") are also represented. France made it into the pre-selection with the musical film "Emilia Pérez" by director Jacques Audiard.
Special effects, make-up and short films
Ten films made it onto the shortlist for special effects, including "Dune: Part Two". German special effects artist Gerd Nefzer, who has already won Oscars for "Blade Runner 2049" and "Dune", was involved in this.
Among the ten candidates in the "Makeup and Hairstyling" category is the film "Maria" starring Angelina Jolie in the role of opera singer Maria Callas. Berlin make-up artist Heike Merker played a key role in the biopic. Merker had already been nominated for an Oscar in 2023 for her work on "Nothing New in the West", but came away empty-handed.
The Oscar nominations in all categories, with five candidates in each, will be announced on January 17. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025.
