Five construction experts are on trial in Bern in the first instance in the case concerning the new villa built by former professional ice hockey player Mark Streit. Right at the beginning of the trial, their lawyers applied for the proceedings to be suspended, but were unsuccessful.

The five defendants were fined for violations of the cantonal Water Protection Act and the cantonal Building Act and therefore appealed to the Bern-Mittelland Regional Court. One of the defendants is also accused of forging documents. Streit himself has not been charged.

The fines came about after failed borehole drilling at Mark Streit's new villa in Muri near Bern a few years ago. Workers hit a groundwater deposit, after which a lot of water leaked out. This damaged neighboring properties and houses. The damage ran into the millions, as the media reported.
