A six-car pile-up occurred on Tuesday morning on the A9 highway in Valais between Riddes and Conthey. Five people were injured and taken to hospital.

The five injured were not in mortal danger, a spokesman for the Valais cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The accident occurred at around 7.30 am. Four hours later, the section of highway between the Riddes and Conthey exits was still closed in order to carry out the accident investigation and recover the vehicles involved, according to the spokesperson.

It was initially unclear when the highway would be reopened to traffic. Traffic jams formed on the cantonal road, which served as a bypass.
