“Forest Fire in Upper Valais – Several Helicopters in Use”

On Monday, a large forest fire broke out in Oberhalb von Bitsch/Ried-Mörel in the Oberwallis region of Switzerland. Firefighters and two helicopters were deployed to fight the flames. The road Ried-Mörel was closed until further notice and the inhabitants of the village Oberried were asked to go to the gathering point at the community house of Ried-Mörel and close their doors and windows. In addition to the local fire brigades, the police, civil protection and rescue teams were also mobilized. Shortly before 8 pm, two helicopters were in use and a third and fourth were on standby. The wind was strong in the Rhone Valley and helped the fire spread. The exact cause and extent of the fire was not yet known at the early evening. The fire was visible from far away.
