Former Ticino cantonal councillor Manuele Bertoli (SP), together with a party colleague and trade union secretary, has lodged an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court against the 2024 cantonal budget. The budget is said to inadmissibly contain two provisions that are not subject to a referendum.

The two provisions were added by the preliminary deliberations of the Business and Financial Audit Committee, the complainants write in a communiqué.

By approving the 2024 budget in this form, the cantonal parliament has deprived the people of Ticino of a fundamental constitutional right. The two politicians are therefore calling for the two provisions to be repealed.

The provisions relate to asylum costs and the personnel policy for cantonal employees.

The Federal Supreme Court confirmed receipt of the appeal to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
