Four candidates are entering the race for the vacant seat on the Basel government council: These are Mustafa Atici (SP), Luca Urgese (FDP). Jérôme Thiriet (Greens) and the far-right councillor Eric Weber. In addition to Atici, Thiriet and Weber, the incumbent councillor Conradin Cramer (LDP) is also standing for election to the presidency.

The election to the cantonal government and the presidency will both take place on the weekend of March 3, 2024, as announced by the Basel State Chancellery on Monday. A possible second round of voting is scheduled for the weekend of 7 April. The candidate will take office on May 1, 2024.

The by-election is necessary because Beat Jans (SP), the current President of the cantonal government, was elected to the Federal Council on December 13 as Alain Berset's successor. General elections will follow in Basel-Stadt on October 20.
