Rail traffic on the Olten-Bern line has been restricted since Monday morning. According to SBB, the reason for this was a freight train blocking the line. Shortly before 9 a.m., SBB was still busy towing the train away.

At around 5.30 a.m., a freight train operated by the German rail freight company DB Cargo got stuck on the Bahn 2000 line between Rothrist AG and the Wanzwil BE junction, as SBB media spokesman Reto Schärli told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. The reason was a defective pantograph.

An initial attempt to tow the train away with a new locomotive failed due to another vehicle defect. The SBB fire and rescue train then moved out to the blocked train.

Due to the heavy weight of the freight train, the rescue train took up the towing work with the help of an additional powerful shunting locomotive. According to Schärli, SBB assumed that the line would be passable again from 9 a.m. without any restrictions.

During the disruption, there were cancellations, detour and delays on numerous lines, according to SBB's Railinfo rail information service. The SBB rerouted trains from Geneva Airport to Basel and vice versa via Biel. Trains between Geneva Airport and Olten, Lucerne, Zurich and St. Gallen also ran via Biel.
