Geneva wants to provide better care for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers

The canton of Geneva wants to improve the reception and stay of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers. It has created a new inter-institutional platform to facilitate the care and integration of young people.
"This platform is the right response to these young people who are minors before they become refugees," said Social Affairs Director Thierry Apothéloz (SP) to the media in Geneva on Tuesday. The number of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in the canton of Geneva rose by three quarters to 300 last year.
The aim of inter-institutional care is to provide young people with more holistic support. It covers several areas. Underage asylum seekers should undergo a socio-medical examination when they are first admitted.
They will then be placed in accommodation with an educational project. In addition, the young people are to be given access to training and receive educational support until they reach the age of majority in order to avoid disruption and disorientation.
