On Sunday, the Glarus electorate will vote on a new cycle path law and a CHF 35 million loan at the Landsgemeinde. The newly elected Federal Councillor Beat Jans (SP) is attending this year's extraordinary political event.

The people of Glarus traditionally hold their cantonal votes on the first Sunday in May on a wooden ring in the cantonal capital. Everyone aged 16 and over is entitled to vote. The Landsgemeinde also allows for spontaneous amendments - a scenario that is not possible at the ballot box.

Two of the seven items on the agenda could lead to longer queues in front of the lectern on Sunday: The cantonal cycle path law is likely to reignite a discussion about the coexistence of hikers and cyclists. And an odyssey surrounding a construction loan of 35 million francs could raise critical voices.

The Glarus authorities are aiming for joint use of cycle paths and hiking trails in the Bicycle Path Act. Due to the emerging potential for conflict, a code of conduct for hikers and cyclists is to be drawn up, the government wrote. Currently, 87 percent of the cantonal cycle routes are also used by pedestrians.

The 35.6 million Swiss francs for the expansion of the Ziegelbrücke vocational college is also likely to attract criticism. The canton of Glarus had to go all the way to the Federal Supreme Court for this project. The loan will now be put to the people three years late and a few francs more expensive.
