The winter closure on the Gotthard Pass is to be lifted next Wednesday, May 29 at 11 am. However, this date is not guaranteed, the Federal Roads Office Astra announced on Thursday. It depends on how the weather develops.

Last year, the connection over the 2108-metre-high pass was opened on 19 May. This year, however, there was a lot of snow in the mountains. Due to the limited capacity of the Gotthard road tunnel, road traffic heading south recently caused long traffic jams over the Whitsun weekend.

As announced by Astra, the Göschenen UR exit lane will also be extended from the regular 1.7 kilometers to 3 kilometers as of 29 May. This is intended to encourage drivers who want to drive to Andermatt UR and onwards over the passes to stay on the A2 despite traffic jams in front of the Gotthard road tunnel and not switch to the cantonal road.
