Stefan Engler, a member of the Council of States from the Grisons, has been elected first Vice-President of the Council of States. The second Vice-President is Bernese SVP member of the Council of States Werner Salzmann.
On Monday, 64-year-old Engler received 45 out of 45 valid votes. He is therefore likely to become President of the Council of States in December 2025, while Salzmann will become First Vice-President. Stefan Engler lives in Chur, is a lawyer and has been a member of the small chamber since 2011.
Mathilde Crevoisier Crelier (SP/JU) was elected as vote counter and Thierry Burkart (FDP/AG) as substitute vote counter. Together with the President and Vice-Presidents, they form the office of the Council of States. Normally, the vote counters are later promoted to the Vice-Presidency and then to the Presidency.
The Office of the Council of States leads the small chamber. It adopts the session program, elects the members and chairpersons of the committees and delegations, determines the subject areas of the standing committees and assigns them the items to be discussed.
