Geneva Council of States member Lisa Mazzone will not run for the Federal Council on behalf of her Green Party. She wants to continue her work as a member of the Council of States, she told media. She will run in the second round of elections on November 12.

"It's not the right time," she said in an interview published Monday on the Le Temps website.

If Mazzone is re-elected on Nov. 12, she is expected to take over the presidency of the Council of States at the end of next year. This would be "a good opportunity for her to bring Geneva closer to Bern and Bern closer to Geneva," she said.

The Geneva resident, who is committed to representing the language regions, also believes that the time has not come for another representative from French-speaking Switzerland on the Federal Council.

Mazzone, on the other hand, calls for "more diversity" in the Federal Council: "Currently, only one generation is represented there, with members who are all more or less five years apart after the departure of Alain Berset. Young mothers or young fathers should be represented there," she said. The big cities are also not represented, she added.

The Greens had decided on Saturday to run for a seat in the Federal Council. They want to submit a candidacy that is directed against one of the two FDP seats. For Mazzone, the magic formula is "definitively buried" today. The overall renewal of the government must be used to update it, "because it does not reflect the diversity of political forces," she said.
