The mountain railroads in Graubünden have started the winter season with 20.6 percent more first-time admissions by the end of 2023. This was the second-best start to the season in the last ten years, the Graubünden mountain railroads announced on Tuesday.

Last winter, the mountain railroads recorded 19 percent fewer guests at the start of the winter season, after the previous winter had reached the high level before the Covid-19 pandemic with an increase of 28 percent. Compared to the 5-year average, the increase at the start of the current winter season is 12.2 percent - compared to the 10-year average, it is 18.7 percent.

Thanks to technical snowmaking and the snowfall in December, the mountain railroads were able to open early and achieve very good visitor numbers in the pre-season, as the Graubünden mountain railroads reported. The current range of slopes is very broad and the many guests are well distributed across the ski areas.

In addition to the slopes, the other snow activities such as winter hiking, tobogganing and various events were also well attended by guests. The rather warm "terrace weather" has also led to pleasing restaurant sales.

According to the Mountain Railway Monitor of the Bergbahnen Graubünden (BBGR) industry organization, the Central Region (including Arosa Lenzerheide), the Surselva Region with an increase of 25.5% and the Davos Klosters Region with an increase of 22.2% were above the overall increase of 20.6% in guest frequencies at the end of December 2023. The Engadin recorded a smaller increase: 9.2% in the Lower Engadin and 6.8% in the Upper Engadin.

Traffic revenue over the festive period accounts for around 20 to 25 percent of the total traffic revenue of Graubünden's mountain railroads, 90 percent of which is still generated in winter, as the press release goes on to say.
