The heatwave also reached the northern side of the Alps on Sunday with temperatures widely exceeding 30 degrees. In Biasca TI, another annual high of 36.4 degrees was reached.
The federal government issued a level 3 heat warning for the regions of Basel, the Rhine Valley, the Lake Geneva basin and Valais from midday on Sunday until Tuesday evening. On Sunday afternoon, 32.2 degrees were measured in Basel-Binningen, 32.5 degrees in Sion, 32.1 degrees in Geneva and 31.9 degrees in Chur, according to the MeteoSwiss website.
In these areas, there is a "considerable danger" with level 3 until Tuesday. This means that the average daily temperature will be 25 degrees or higher for at least three consecutive days. MeteoSwiss refers to this danger level as a heatwave.
Weak disruption from Tuesday evening
Even at night, it will only cool down to between 18 and 22 degrees. In urban areas, however, the night-time lows could be a few degrees higher than in the surrounding regions due to the slower cooling, according to the federal government's natural hazards bulletin.
There could possibly be a temporary weakening on Monday evening due to thunderstorms. A weak disturbance is then expected on Tuesday evening, which should end the heatwave on the northern side of the Alps and in Valais.
Tropical nights expected
The second-highest warning level 4 has been in force in Ticino since Saturday. In addition to Biasca, it also got really hot in Stabio TI and Locarno/Monti in the afternoon with 33.8 degrees. During the night, temperatures in central and southern Ticino are unlikely to fall below 20 degrees.
The second-highest level 4 warning is issued by the federal government if the average daily temperature is 27 degrees or more on at least three days. It will initially apply in Ticino until Tuesday evening. After that, warning level 3 will remain in force until Friday.
