Despite the end of the "traffic light" coalition, Federal Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) still wants to get the pension package initiated together with former Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) through the Bundestag. He will ensure that the reform continues, Heil said in a ZDF "Spezial". He is counting on decisions being made this year that Germany needs and that should come into force at the beginning of next year.
What will become of Lindner's generational capital?
Under pressure from the FDP, the pension package not only includes provisions for the long-term stabilization of pensions. It also provides for the creation of a capital stock worth billions from federal debt not counted towards the debt brake. The interest income from this will later be used to somewhat cushion the increases in contributions that have been accepted.
Heil wants to fight for majorities
Heil announced his intention to work hard to secure majorities now that the SPD and Greens no longer have their own majority in the Bundestag. "We will also fight for them," the SPD politician announced. Heil also expressed his confidence in the planned reduction of the cold progression: "This must also be a concern for the CDU/CSU and FDP. Cold progression is when citizens have to pay more to the tax authorities due to rising tax rates, even if their salary increase only compensates for inflation.
