Demand for Fairtrade products increased in Switzerland last year. The financial situation of Fairtrade Max Havelaar also stabilized again after a loss in the previous year, according to a press release on Tuesday.
Last year, the Swiss spent a total of CHF 970 million on Fairtrade products. This represents an increase of six percent compared to the previous year. Per capita consumption peaked at CHF 110.
Last year, the Fairtrade market share was particularly high for cane sugar (79%), bananas (51%), rice (39%), fruit juices and pineapples (30% each).
More than three quarters of the products were sold over the counter at Coop, Migros, Aldi Suisse and Lidl Switzerland. According to the press release, retailers increased their sales of Fairtrade products by seven percent last year, with branded goods manufacturers and coffee roasters increasing even more.
With the higher demand, income from license fees also increased. After a loss of around half a million francs in the previous year, the foundation made a small profit of 41,000 francs in 2023. Measures have been taken to sustainably reduce personnel and material costs, it said.
Fairtrade Max Havelaar awards the Fairtrade label in Switzerland for products from Africa, Asia and Latin America. According to the press release, these products provide farmers and workers with higher incomes and better working conditions.
