In Zurich, on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, hundreds of people formed a human chain between the Stadthaus and Grossmünster. Around 300 people had previously taken to the streets to protest against the war.

Many people with Ukrainian flags could be seen in the human chain on Saturday evening. At the end, they sang the Ukrainian national anthem, among other things.

In addition to Mayor Corine Mauch (SP) and Grossmünster pastor Christoph Sigrist, other city councillors and representatives of Jewish and Islamic communities took part. There were no speeches at the event.

People formed chains in two rows, stretching from the Stadthaus on the left bank of the Limmat to the Grossmünster on the other side of the river. Meanwhile, the bells of the four Old Town churches rang out. The police closed the Limmatquai and Münsterbrücke for the event, which lasted around twenty minutes.

The commemorative event was organized by the City of Zurich and the Grossmünster. Afterwards, a service was held in the church in German, Ukrainian and Russian.

Left-wing demonstration

In the afternoon, around 300 demonstrators had already gathered at the Landesmuseum to protest against the war. They marched peacefully through the city center. Traffic was disrupted on Bahnhofstrasse and other streets.

Several speeches denounced the Russian regime as imperialist and called for solidarity with the Ukrainian workers. Chants of solidarity with Palestine were also heard.

The Movement for Socialism had called for the authorized demonstration. Left-wing Ukrainian organizations and the Group for a Switzerland without an Army (GsoA) also took part.
