The canton of Graubünden has stopped hunting wolves. The reason for this was an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court, the cantonal office wrote on its website on Friday evening. The federal government has not yet received any notification.

It was initially unclear whether other cantons were also affected. The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) was unable to provide any information on Friday evening, according to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The canton of Graubünden was also unable to comment on the complaint on Friday evening. So far, eight of the 44 authorized culls in the mountain canton have been shot, said the cantonal councillor responsible in the Grand Council, the cantonal parliament, at the beginning of the week.

Nature conservation organizations behind complaint

According to the Tages-Anzeiger, nature conservation organizations such as WWF and Pro Natura are behind the complaint. A spokeswoman for Pro Natura told the newspaper: "We are of the opinion that the extermination of entire packs of wolves should remain the last resort." However, she did not say whether she had also filed complaints in other cantons.

Ten wolves were killed in the canton of Valais during this first week of hunting. Seven packs, just over 30 predators, are to be eliminated.

The new hunting ordinance allows wolves in Switzerland to be shot preventively before they cause damage. At the end of November, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) approved applications from five cantons to shoot a total of twelve wolf packs. Since December 1, the shooting must take place within a two-month time frame.
