On Monday afternoon, no aircraft were able to take off at Zurich Airport due to a technical problem at the air traffic control service Skyguide. Despite the glitch, however, delays were limited.
There were even no flight cancellations at all due to the IT problems, as an analysis of the departure tableau by the AWP news agency revealed. Of the 115 departures scheduled at Zurich Airport after 2 p.m. on Monday, 64 were delayed. This means that almost 65 percent of the aircraft took off in the afternoon and evening a quarter of an hour or more later than planned. 17 flights were delayed by more than an hour, five by more than two hours.
At Swiss, the largest and most important airline at Kloten, 34 of 62 flights are delayed in the afternoon and evening, according to the airport's departure table.
The various departure delays pushed up the delay rate at Zurich Airport accordingly. Viewed over the entire day and in relation to arrivals and departures, this amounted to around 36 percent on Monday. Compared with the Monday of the previous week, this is even lower - on October 23, the delay rate was over 40 percent. The figure is thus well within the range of delays that can also occur due to high traffic volumes, certain weather conditions and other factors.
For example, according to data collected by AWP, the delay rate in the month of October was 37.2 percent so far. In September, it was just under 41 percent, in August 43 percent and in July even over 50 percent.
