Italy is apparently prepared to negotiate the readmission of refugees (Dublin cases). According to the Federal Department of Justice and Police, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi signaled his willingness to discuss the matter on Monday following a meeting with Federal Councillor Beat Jans.

In this context, Piantedosi spoke to the media about the decline in the number of asylum applications in Italy and the planned implementation of the migration and asylum pact in 2026, wrote Federal Councillor Jans' department on Tuesday.

With this in mind, Italy is ready to enter into talks with Switzerland and the EU countries. The Italian Minister of the Interior has announced that he will invite Jans to Rome next year to discuss the resumption of Dublin transfers.

Italy has not accepted Dublin cases from other European countries since December 2022. Until now, Italy had not promised to change this practice before the implementation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum in 2026.

At Monday's working meeting in Chiasso, Federal Councillor Jans expressed the expectation that Italy would allow Dublin transfers again. This is particularly in view of the solidarity mechanism provided for in the migration and asylum pact, which is intended to relieve particularly burdened countries such as Italy in the future.

According to Jans, the federal government has had to take responsibility for around 1,000 people since November 2022, although Italy would actually be responsible. Around 390 of these have since received a positive asylum decision. Repatriation has been initiated for the others.
