Jositsch Wins Re-Election to the Council of States – Race in Bern Open

In the Swiss cantons of Zurich, Bern, Geneva, Ticino and Vaud, the first round of elections for the Council of States (Ständerat) took place on Sunday. In Zurich, incumbent Daniel Jositsch (SP) was re-elected, followed by Gregor Rutz (SVP), Regine Sauter (FDP) and Tiana Moser (GLP). In Bern, no candidate achieved an absolute majority, so a second round of voting will take place on November 19th. In Geneva, Mauro Poggia (MCG) and Lisa Mazzone (Greens) are the frontrunners, and a second round of voting will also take place there. In Ticino, SVP party president Marco Chiesa is in the lead, followed by Fabio Regazzi (Mitte), Alex Farinelli (FDP), Greta Gysin (Greens) and Bruno Storni (SP). In Vaud, SP politician Pierre-Yves Maillard was elected in the first round, while FDP's Pascal Broulis will face a second round of voting against Green candidate Raphaël Mahaim. In Schwyz, National Councillor Pirmin Schwander (SVP) was elected to the Council of States, while in Neuchâtel, Baptiste Hurni (SP) won the seat from Philippe Bauer (FDP). Currently, the centre holds 14 seats in the Council of States, the FDP 12, the SVP 7, the SP 6 and the Greens 5. Thomas Minder (SH) is non-partisan and politically aligned with the SVP faction.
