Just four wolf kills on the Glarus Alps

Wolves have only killed four livestock in the canton of Glarus this summer. The wildlife authorities attribute the low number of kills to herd protection, wolf culls and the migration of a pack.
"In total, one goat from an unprotected herd and three sheep from a protected herd were killed by wolves," the canton announced on Thursday. Wildlife authorities and the cantonal agriculture department see various reasons for the decline in the number of kills.
According to current knowledge, no wolves reproduced in the canton this year. In addition, the lead male of the Kärpf pack, which was also responsible for tears on cattle last year, was killed in December 2023. And the Schilt pack moved its territory to the neighboring canton of St. Gallen.
Consistent herd protection
In addition, sheep grazing was completely avoided on the Mürtschenalp. "Herd protection is consistently implemented on the other alps," praised the canton.
Despite the low number of cracks during the summering period, the authorities warned that people should not be lulled into a false sense of security. "Herd protection must continue to be implemented professionally during the autumn grazing period," emphasized the game warden and the agricultural department.
Wolves must also be expected in the canton of Glarus in the coming years. The implementation of herd protection concepts for sheep and goat alpine pastures will have to remain an integral part of summering, as will herd protection measures on home farms.
