The Canton of Zurich has announced the opening of a new service to combat female genital mutilation (FGM). The service, which will be operated by the city's medical service, will open in January 2024 and will provide free advice and support to those affected or at risk of FGM. It will also promote the networking of specialist services, asylum structures and doctors. The Federal Council had already called on the cantons in 2020 to take more action against FGM. Estimates suggest that around 22,000 people in Switzerland are affected by FGM. The new service will provide a much needed resource to those affected and at risk, and will help to raise awareness of the issue and promote better understanding of the risks associated with FGM.
